The following resources provide a wealth of information to assist staff, volunteers and board members with building more sustainable and effective programs. These organizations and links cover aspects of nonprofit management, advocacy, volunteerism, board development, philanthropy and fundraising, legal issues and technology. Much of this information is free or available for a modest fee. We encourage you to peruse these sites and let us know how we might add to this list.

  • Alliance for Justice — www.afj.org
    It's Nonprofit Advocacy Project works to strengthen the voice of the nonprofit sector in public policy debates by giving tax-exempt organizations a better understanding of the laws that govern their participation in the policy process.

  • Alliance for Nonprofit Management — www.allianceonline.org
    A professional association devoted to improving the management and governance capacity of nonprofits, through publications, workshops, an annual conference and more.

  • Board Source — www.boardsource.org
    Builds effective nonprofit boards through publications, consulting and training.

  • 501(c)(3) application help page — www.form1023help.com
    Help for new nonprofit organizations to complete IRS Form 1023, the Application for Exempt Status Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Nearly 50 pages of useful information.

  • Foundation Center Library — www.fdncenter.org
    A wealth of web-based information for grantseekers. Also, locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, NYC, San Francisco. In addition, Cooperating Collections are free funding information centers in libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers that provide a core collection of Foundation Center publications and a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers.     A wealth of articles and information on every imaginable topic related to building the capacity and infrastructure of nonprofits. Includes a category search of free, self-directed management courses in a wide range of topics.

  • Grassroots Fundraising — www.grassrootsfundraising.org
    Practical tips and tools to teach nonprofits of all sizes about fundraising, with particular focus on progressive social change.

  • Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training — www.grassrootsinstitute.org
    Develops and strengthens the grassroots fundraising skills of people working for social justice, with an emphasis on communities of color.

    A national nonprofit committed to strengthening, promoting and advancing the nonprofit and philanthropic community to foster private initiative for the public good.

    See "exempt organizations" for comprehensive discussions on the requirements for tax-exempt status and recognition as a charity by the federal government.

  • National Council of Nonprofit Associations — www.ncna.org
    Network of state and regional nonprofit associations in 46 states and the District of Columbia.

  • Nonprofit FAQs — www.nonprofits.org
    Questions and answers about all aspects of nonprofit management exchanged on the internet since 1994. Is actually a section of the idealist.org website.

  • Nonprofit Law Resource Library — www.hurwitassociates.com
    Provides information on a range of legal areas related to nonprofit management including, how to start a nonprofit, governance, liability, risk management, insurance and other areas.

  • Nonprofit Quarterly — www.nonprofitquarterly.org
    Magazine that provides nonprofits with values-based management information and proven practices. Each issue focuses on a theme of critical importance to the sector.

  • Nonprofit Risk Management Center — www.nonprofitrisk.org
    Offers a range of services for nonprofits on risk management topics including employment practices, insurance purchasing, internal controls, and more.

  • TACS Technical Assistance for Community Services — www.tacs.org
    Technical Assistance for Community Services (TACS) has served the nonprofit community in Oregon for 30 years providing training, consultation, information, and resources that nonprofits need to do their work better. Assists nonprofit organizations with consultation and customized trainings on financial management, board development, technology, strategic planning, diversity, collaborations, management assessments, leadership development, funding strategy, and executive transition services.

  • Tech Soup — www.techsoup.org
    Web-based resource center that offers technology assistance and solutions for small to mid-size nonprofits.

  • Outcomes Web Sitepubs.pcadv.net/FVPSA_Outcome/
    These forms were designed by the Documenting Our Work Project of the National Resource Center. Advocates helped designed and test the survey forms. Oregon's Department of Human Service, brought the creators of this work to provide training around the state in the Fall of 2008. The web site has the training manual and copies of all the forms.
